Waste data should be available from your waste service provider (if you have one).

If you do not have waste data (e.g. you share a waste service with other businesses, or use a council kerbside service), then you can estimate your waste by carrying out a waste audit for a short period (e.g. 2 weeks) and estimate annual waste. (Note, don't let your people know you are doing this, so they don't change their behaviour.)

Regarding whether your waste is sent to a landfill with methane gas recovery, landfills servicing the major cities generally have gas recovery; some landfills in the other regions also have gas recovery. Check out Appendix C of this Ministry for the Environment guide for the details.

New Zealand Government emission factors are used. Where the NZ government defines more than one emission factor for a broad activity type, the calculator uses the stated default value, or the one which is considered the most appropriate. For example, the calculator uses the emission factor for 'General waste'.
